Our appartment is on the fourth floor, the elevator is small and we have to use stairs. That’s why we bought the Bugaboo Donkey in the current version 5 (incl. the twin extension set) for our twins, because it is easy to change to mono mode and we hoped that it would then fit into the elevator. Read on and watch our video to see if we were successful. Update: As of November 2023 (Age: 9 months 1 day) we switched to toddler seats.
Does a donkey fit into our elevator?
First we thought that a donkey will never fit into the elevator because of the relatively long (ca. 90-97 cm) bassinets and its width of 74 cm in twin mode (60 cm in mono mode). Actually a seller already recommended us to find a new appartment. But check out our video where you can see our routine that works for us:
In the meantime we switched to toddler seats. Now the seats are even easier to carry because the bassinets had a heavy wooden board inside.
Actually the Bugaboo fits through all entrances that can accomodate a wheelchair.
With a donkey in public transport
We don’t have a car at the moment that’s why we are using public transport. Luckily in Vienna there are low-floor trams so there is not much of a problem with our double pram.
Regarding trains that’s a different story in Vienna at the moment but the situation is improving. Sometimes the local trains are served by 4020 class trains where there are steep steps at the doors and also the doors are not wide enough.
Unfortunately the display in the train app is sometimes incorrect, i.e. when it says “low-floor” there is still a chance that it is not.
One possibility would be to do a quick conversion to the mono mode when we see a 4020 appearing on the horizon. Actually now that we are experienced we managed to do it. But when we are alone it totally impossible: Even if some people try to help us they mess up and put our babies or our luggage in danger.
A donkey in a car
For putting the stroller into the trunk of a car it can be folded quickly. But the bassinet is kind of bulky. Now that we have switched to the toddler seats it is easier.
Or you use car seats like Maxi Cosi for smaller babys. Then you will need the car seat adapter and have a true 3-in-1-solution.
It’s just important to not leave the baby inside these seats for too long because it is bad for the back of the baby and also it cannot move so freely. That’s why we prefer to use the bassinets and in the car or for travelling we use two separate Doona+ carseat strollers:
Toddler Seats
In November 2023 (Age: 9 months 1 day) we switched to toddler seats even though one baby was not able to sit on its own.
Mono mode
Often we use the Donkey 5 in mono mode, for example when we go out with just one baby. Or for shopping, then we will have to carry one baby in a carrier.
A disadvantage of the Donkey 5 with 2 bassinets mounted is that it is difficult to get to the underseat basket:
With the toddler seats this is not an issue anymore:
For children of different age like for a sibling stroller you will probably need the duo extension kit, i.e. not a second bassinet:
Functions
All buttons, clips and levers are in white which makes operating the Bugaboo quick and easy:
Advantages of version 5
Taking out the bassinet is easy: Probably you have already seen it in the video at the top of this blog post. Just push the 2 frame release buttons.
Accessories
Rain cover
The rain covers are included:
Mosquito net
We bought these 2 mosquito nets:
Carabiners and organizer / diaper bag
We attached the diaper bag to the handlebar (you can read about it here and also what we carry inside):
What we are missing that here is not attachment on the sun canopy for a toy chain. But it is still fairly easy to attach something like this.
Cup Catcher
Toys, Pacifiers and bottles fall more easily from the toddler seat than from the bassinet that’s why we bought a cup catcher as soon as we switched to the toddler seats:
(Winter) Footmuff
In the toddler seats the babies are more exposed and cannot move as much. That’s why in autumn we bought footmuffs and when it is very cold they are wearing woolen fleece overalls from Popolini.
Accessory shopping list
For the winter we will need at least a Winter Footmuff:
-
Cup Catcher, Silicone, BPA-fere
-
Bugaboo Comfort Wheeled Buggy Board
-
Bugaboo Baby Cocoon
-
Bugaboo Winter Footmuff
-
Bugaboo All-Season Footmuff
-

-

-
Mosquito Net for Strollers
-

-

Is a Donkey 5 the perfect stroller?
We receive lots of praises when we go out with the stroller (like “Look, that is a fancy stroller!”).
Esp. when we had the bassinets we felt like steering a ships because of the weight. But this is what makes it so stable to drive and steer it. (The bassinet has a nice mattress and a sturdy wooden base.)
It is an excellent twin stroller that I can wholeheartedly recommend, also if you just need the mono version because it is like a real donkey that can carry its load. We like the timeless design and the high production quality.
There are a few small things that are annoying like that it is difficult to access the underseat basket or I also don’t like that the top cover is squeezed between the bassinet and the frame.
You have to open two clips to extend the handlebar (with other strollers it is one button in the middle):
If you have a solution for these “problem” or other ideas or questions please don’t hesitate to post in the comments!
How to buy a Donkey 5
If you have twins you will need the mono version and the twin extension kit. If you have kids of different age you will probably need the mono version and the duo extension kit (for a sibling stroller):
So have fun with the stroller and enjoy your babys and kids as long as they are still small!
